A head guard is a padded piece of headgear worn during sparring in boxing, kickboxing and various other striking arts. It typically covers the sides, back and top of the head, with cheek padding on many models, and is fastened with a chin strap to keep it from shifting during exchanges.
Coverage varies by design. Some head guards leave more of the face open for better vision and airflow, favoured for technical sparring, while others add more cheek and jaw padding for harder contact. Competition rules under different federations can specify what type of head guard, if any, is permitted, so it is worth checking the relevant rules before a tournament rather than assuming any head guard will be accepted.
Fit matters as much as padding thickness, since a head guard that shifts during movement can briefly block vision at exactly the wrong moment. Trying one on with a mouthguard in place is a sensible check, since the combination can change how snugly the guard sits. See our protective gear overview and buying guide for related advice.
