IJF approved

IJF approved refers to a judogi that meets the requirements set by the International Judo Federation for use in sanctioned competition. These rules cover details such as jacket and sleeve length relative to the body, jacket and pants weight, and overall construction, so that competitors face a consistent standard rather than widely differing uniforms.

The approval label matters most for athletes competing at a level where officials check equipment before a match, since a judogi that does not meet the current specification can be rejected at weigh in or before a bout, regardless of how well it otherwise fits or performs. For everyday club training, a non approved judogi is entirely normal and is chosen mainly for comfort, durability and budget.

Because federation specifications are periodically updated, checking the current IJF rules before a competition, rather than relying on an older approval, is worth doing ahead of any event where equipment is inspected. See our gi sizing and shrinkage guide for how fit relates to these measurement based requirements.
