WKF approved

WKF approved refers to equipment, most commonly a karategi, that meets the requirements set by the World Karate Federation for kata and kumite competition. These rules address details such as jacket length, sleeve length and overall cut, so that competitors at sanctioned events are judged under comparable conditions.

The distinction matters mainly for competitors entering events where equipment checks take place, since a karategi that falls outside the current specification can be flagged before a match starts. Club training does not require WKF approved equipment, and many practitioners choose a karategi based on comfort, weight and durability rather than competition specification.

Protective gear used in WKF kumite, including gloves and foot protection, is also subject to its own approval requirements, separate from the uniform itself. Checking current WKF rules before a tournament is the reliable way to confirm what is required, since specifications can be updated between competition cycles. See our uniforms and belts overview for general fit guidance.
