Groin guard

A groin guard, sometimes called a cup or pelvic protector, is worn to reduce the risk of injury from kicks, knees or accidental contact during sparring and grappling. It is standard equipment in most striking arts and is also common in grappling styles where takedowns and scrambles can lead to unintended impact.

Designs vary from a hard cup held in place by a supporter or compression shorts, to a fuller pelvic shield that also covers more of the hip area, used in some full contact striking sports. The right choice depends on the art practised and the level of contact, and comfort under movement matters as much as coverage, since a guard that shifts during kicks or takedowns loses much of its value.

Sizing follows body size rather than age alone, and a guard that is too large can move out of position at exactly the moment it is needed. Many clubs treat a groin guard as required equipment from the first sparring session onward. See our protective gear overview and buying guide for how it fits alongside other equipment.
