BJJ gi

A BJJ gi is the uniform used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, sharing the same basic jacket, trousers and belt layout as other forms of gi but adapted for that sport's grappling style. The jacket collar is a defining feature: BJJ relies heavily on collar and lapel grips for control and submissions, so the collar is reinforced, often with rubber or extra layers of fabric, to resist tearing and to meet a minimum thickness required in competition.

BJJ gi are commonly described by weave, such as single weave, gold weave or pearl weave, which trade off weight, durability and how much the fabric shrinks when washed. The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation, IBJJF, sets rules on collar thickness, jacket and trouser fit and overall gi condition for tournaments, which is why the term IBJJF legal is used to describe a gi that meets those requirements. Many practitioners also train without a gi, known as no gi, using a rash guard and shorts or spats instead.

See our BJJ gi guide for choosing a weave and size, and the entry on IBJJF legal for what competition organisers check.
