Single weave

Single weave describes a straightforward, single layer fabric construction used for gi jackets, generally lighter and more flexible than a double weave fabric. It was for a long time the standard construction before newer weaves such as pearl weave became common on Brazilian jiu jitsu gi.

Because it uses less material per square metre, a single weave gi tends to be cooler to train in and softer against the skin from the start, which suits warmer climates or anyone who prefers a lighter, less bulky feel during training. The tradeoff is generally lower durability under heavy, repeated gripping compared with a thicker weave, so a single weave jacket may show wear sooner under intensive competition style training.

Single weave remains common on judogi and karategi, where the fabric requirements and typical gi weight differ from Brazilian jiu jitsu conventions, and on lighter training gi aimed at beginners or warm weather use. See our gi sizing and shrinkage guide for how weave and weight together affect how a gi fits after washing.
