Pearl weave

Pearl weave is a fabric pattern widely used on the jacket of a BJJ gi, named for the small, raised, pearl like bumps the weave produces on the surface of the cotton fabric. It sits between the older single weave and double weave fabrics in overall thickness and feel.

Compared with a traditional single weave, pearl weave typically offers a good balance of durability and low weight, and tends to dry faster after washing, which matters for anyone training often and needing a gi ready for the next session. This combination has made pearl weave one of the most common fabric choices on modern competition and training gi jackets.

Within pearl weave itself, manufacturers vary the exact weight and finish, so two gi jackets both described as pearl weave can still feel noticeably different in the hand and under grips. Checking the stated gi weight alongside the weave name gives a fuller picture before buying. See our gi sizing and shrinkage guide for how fabric choice affects fit over time.
