Shin guards

Shin guards are padded protective covers for the lower leg, worn mainly in kicking based arts such as kickboxing, Muay Thai and taekwondo sparring. The shin bone sits close to the skin with little natural cushioning, so repeated contact from kicks and blocks without protection can cause bruising and, over time, more serious strain.

Coverage ranges from guards that protect only the shin to versions that extend down over the top of the foot, called instep protection, which matters in arts where kicks are thrown with the shin or foot against a partner. Padding is usually a layered foam, sometimes combined with a firmer outer shell for sparring at higher intensity, while lighter, more flexible pads suit technical drilling and pad work.

A good fit keeps the guard from sliding during footwork, since a shin guard that rotates out of place no longer protects where contact actually lands. Straps or a sleeve style closure are both common, and trying a guard with the footwork used in class is the most reliable way to judge fit.
