Kihon

Kihon is the Japanese term for basics, and in a martial arts context it refers to the repeated practice of fundamental techniques, such as individual punches, kicks, blocks or stances, performed on their own rather than as part of a longer sequence or against a partner. It is a core part of training in karate and several related arts, especially for beginners.

Drilling kihon builds the muscle memory, balance and correct body mechanics that more complex training later relies on, including kata and kumite. Instructors often return to kihon even with experienced students, since small errors in a basic technique tend to carry over into everything built on top of it, and correcting them early is easier than unlearning bad habits later. Kihon is typically practised in lines, moving up and down a training hall, which also helps a class train together at the same pace.

Our beginners' first gear guide covers what new students typically need for early kihon focused classes.
